CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
To the 10.11 Paprika Festival
Who are we?
We are the home of the emerging artist: Toronto’s only free theatre festival celebrating the work of young and emerging artists, primarily those who are 21 and under. We provide application-based opportunities to learn more about theatre creation from the best in the business. We are an exciting and essential part of the artistic community and we are proud of what we do. And this year it’s our 10th anniversary—so you know it’s going to be crazy awesome. Now that’s hot.
When does it all happen?
Application Deadline: October 8, 2010
10th Annual Paprika Festival: March 18-26, 2011
How can you get involved?
Apply! The Paprika Festival has five ways for you to be our bff:
Under 21?
We are seeking scripts currently in development which are approximately 30 minutes in length or less. To apply for a production, you should have a group of collaborators who will work with you throughout the year to develop the project and perform it during the Festival.
As an intimate group of young artists, the Creators’ Unit will meet weekly for a number of workshops with professional guest artists and experiment with various ideas and forms. Participants will have the chance to work on a solo presentation, as well as working collaboratively to create material for the Festival.
If you have a play (or an idea for one) and you want to develop it, apply to be a Playwright-in-Residence. Participants in this program will work with professional playwrights or dramaturgs to create new scripts of any length.
This program is exclusively for past Festival participants who just can’t get enough and are looking to further develop their skills in a tightly-knit creative ensemble. This intimate group will meet weekly to create a devised ensemble piece guided by professional artist mentors.
Over 21?
Olde Spice is a program for Paprika alumni who are continuing to develop their artistic practice. Now in its second year, anyone who has participated in the Festival over the past nine years (staff, participants, mentors) can apply to present their current or past projects. These presentations may be play readings, musical performances, workshop performances, excerpts from current projects, dance/movement pieces or any combination thereof. Olde Spice applicants must be over 21.
Participants Get More Stuff
All participants attend the four Festival Training Days. Participants will also get the chance to see free performances at various arts institutions throughout the city.
All participants must be available for 2011 Festival Dates: March 13-26, 2011 (including Tech Week). No exceptions.
